The first three App Store screenshots: what to put first

Apple says the first one to three screenshots can appear in search. Design those as your strongest store pitch.

The first three App Store screenshots carry more weight than the rest because they can appear in search results when no app preview is available. Design them as a set, not as ten equal slides.

Apple's guidance

Apple says screenshots should use images captured from the app UI to communicate the experience. You can feature up to 10 screenshots, and the first one to three can appear in search results depending on orientation.

A simple three-shot structure

  • Screenshot 1: the strongest value promise and the most recognizable UI.
  • Screenshot 2: the main workflow or transformation.
  • Screenshot 3: proof, output, result, or secondary feature.

What to avoid

Do not spend screenshot 1 on a settings page. Do not make screenshots 1 to 3 depend on reading screenshots 4 to 10. Do not show a feature in the marketing frame that users cannot find in the app.

Source notes

Apple's product page guidance documents the up-to-10 screenshot count and search-result importance of the first one to three images.
