Google Play app icon requirements: 512 px PNG, no misleading badges

Google Play icons need a 512×512 32-bit PNG under 1024 KB. The policy traps are usually in the design, not the export.

The Google Play app icon is not just a launcher asset. It appears in store listing pages, search results, and ranking surfaces, so a sloppy icon can reduce trust before users read a single line.

The upload requirements

  • 32-bit PNG with alpha.
  • 512 px by 512 px.
  • Maximum file size: 1024 KB.
  • Must meet Google Play's icon design specifications.

Policy traps

Google warns against badges or text that suggest ranking, price, Google Play categories, or anything else that misleads users. Do not use a notification dot, download arrow, sale sticker, or fake award mark in the icon.

Design checklist

  • Test at 48 px, not only at 512 px.
  • Keep the silhouette distinct from competitors.
  • Use one central idea, not a miniature screenshot.

Source notes

Google's preview asset documentation lists the 512 px icon size, 1024 KB maximum, PNG requirement, and misleading-badge guidance.
