Google Play categories and tags help users discover relevant apps. They are not a place for wishful positioning. Pick what the app clearly is, not what audience you hope to borrow.
The tag limit
Google lets you add a maximum of five tags. It recommends choosing the tags most obviously relevant to the app, based on the store listing or the initial in-app experience.
How to choose
- Start with the app's real category and core action.
- Remove adjacent tags that describe competitors, not your app.
- Use accessibility tags only when the app genuinely supports them.
When to change tags
Google recommends changing tags only when you make significant changes to the app's content or functionality. Category churn can confuse both users and your own measurement.
