Google Play categories and tags: pick the five that actually fit

Google lets you add up to five tags. Choose the obvious, relevant tags users can verify from the listing or first app session.

Google Play categories and tags help users discover relevant apps. They are not a place for wishful positioning. Pick what the app clearly is, not what audience you hope to borrow.

The tag limit

Google lets you add a maximum of five tags. It recommends choosing the tags most obviously relevant to the app, based on the store listing or the initial in-app experience.

How to choose

  • Start with the app's real category and core action.
  • Remove adjacent tags that describe competitors, not your app.
  • Use accessibility tags only when the app genuinely supports them.

When to change tags

Google recommends changing tags only when you make significant changes to the app's content or functionality. Category churn can confuse both users and your own measurement.

Source notes

Google's category and tags help page documents the five-tag limit, relevance guidance, accessibility tag examples, and update timing.
