Google Play short description: the 80-character field that sells

Google Play gives you 30 characters for app name, 80 for short description, and 4000 for full description. Use them cleanly.

Google Play has three core text fields for a main listing: app name, short description, and full description. The short description is the one most teams underwrite.

The limits

  • App name: 30 characters.
  • Short description: 80 characters.
  • Full description: 4000 characters.

Google says these limits apply to both full-width and half-width characters. That matters for Japanese, Chinese, and Korean listings: 80 characters means 80 characters, not 80 Latin-equivalent slots.

What the short description should do

Explain the core purpose of the app quickly. It can appear outside the listing, so it needs to make sense without the full description next to it.

What gets risky

Google warns that repetitive or irrelevant keywords in the app name, description, or promotional description can lead to suspension. It also warns preview copy away from ranking claims, awards, price claims, and calls to action.
