Google Play target audience and content: declare it before publishing

Target audience settings can trigger extra Families policy requirements. The declaration must match the real app and listing.

Target audience and content settings tell Google who the app is for. They also determine whether extra family and children's policies apply, so the answer should match the actual product and listing.

What Google requires

Google says you must declare the app's target age group. Apps that include children in the target audience must comply with Google Play's Families policy requirements.

Before you fill it out

Google's content rating guidance says target audience setup comes after declaring ads, providing app access instructions, and adding a privacy policy.

Risk checklist

  • Look for child-directed imagery, characters, and wording.
  • Check ads and in-app purchases for age appropriateness.
  • Do not select multiple age groups unless the app is designed for all of them.

Source notes

Google's target audience and Families policy docs explain the required age group declaration and the impact of child-directed content.
